How Our Team Resolved an IRS Verification Review and Secured a Taxpayer’s Full Refund

In today’s enforcement-focused tax environment, refunds claiming refundable credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the American Opportunity Credit (AOC) are frequently subject to IRS scrutiny. Taxpayers can find themselves on the receiving end of an IRS notice, which can delay refunds.

Read below for a detailed look into our case process and see how our case team worked directly with a taxpayer to successfully navigate an IRS verification review and secure a full refund release for the client.

IRS Refund Hold Due to Credit Verification

Our team was contacted by a taxpayer who received an IRS notice requesting additional information to substantiate their Proof of Employment, Earned Income Tax Credit, and American Opportunity Credit. The notice stated that their refund would be held until these credits were verified. The taxpayer provided our office with a copy of the tax return in question and the IRS correspondence.

Upon receipt, our case team promptly reviewed the documents, processed the intake, and formally opened the case. The matter was then assigned to a Case Resolution Specialist for further action.

Our Case Process

The assigned Case Resolution Specialist conducted a detailed review of the IRS notice and the filed tax return to determine the scope of the examination. Based on this analysis, the Case Resolution Specialist prepared a comprehensive Professional Case Assessment outlining the purpose of the IRS correspondence, recommended actions, and a tailored list of required supporting documentation.

Following delivery of the Professional Case Assessment, the assigned Case Resolution Specialist conducted a consultation call directly with the taxpayer to review the assessment, clarify documentation requirements, and address any questions related to the IRS examination process.

Upon receipt of the requested documentation, our team compiled and submitted a complete response to the IRS. The submission clarified the qualifying relationship of the dependents, confirmed shared residency with the taxpayer, and demonstrated that the taxpayer provided the requisite financial support, fully supporting eligibility for the claimed credits.

Subsequently, the IRS issued an acknowledgment notice confirming receipt of the documentation. Less than one month later, the taxpayer received a final correspondence from the IRS stating that the examination had been completed, all documentation had been reviewed, and no changes would be made to the original tax return.

Successful Outcome

The IRS closed the examination with no adjustments and the taxpayer’s refund was released in full. Through careful case assessment and well-supported documentation, our team efficiently resolved the matter and achieved a favorable outcome for the taxpayer.
